Why a beanie made of merino wool?
Merino wool is a particularly fine natural fiber. It can retain heat without feeling heavy or uncomfortable. At the same time, its natural structure supports temperature and moisture regulation.
This makes merino beanies suitable for cold winter days as well as for changeable weather in autumn and spring.
The benefits of merino wool
- pleasantly warm and soft
- breathable and temperature-regulating
- natural moisture balance
- odor-inhibiting properties
- durable with proper care
- renewable natural resource
Unlike many synthetic materials, merino wool feels natural against the skin and can remain comfortable even when worn for longer periods.
Sustainable beanies made of 100% organic merino wool
Our merino beanies are crafted from wool from controlled organic animal husbandry. The wool used is mulesing-free and GOTS-certified.
The Global Organic Textile Standard considers not only the origin of the fibers but also sets requirements for processing, environmental management, and social criteria along the textile supply chain.
What does mulesing-free mean?
Mulesing is a procedure performed on sheep to prevent certain health conditions. For our beanies, we exclusively use merino wool from mulesing-free farms.
In this way, we combine the natural properties of merino wool with higher standards for animal welfare and supply chain transparency.
Crafted in traditional knitting mills
Our beanies are not products of anonymous mass production. The models by VON OLAF are manufactured in a family-run, traditional knitting mill in Bremen. The Tide beanie by VON JANA is created in a knitting mill south of Hamburg.
Collaborating with specialized knitting mills allows for high-quality workmanship, short coordination paths, and long-lasting products.
Short distances and European manufacturing
For the Tide beanie, the processing steps from dyeing and spinning to knitting all take place within Germany. The production radius from yarn to finished product is approximately 348 kilometers.
For the VON OLAF models, we also rely on European supply chains and manufacturing in Northern Germany.
Which merino beanie is right for you?
Our models differ not only in their colors but also in their knit style, cuff, and fit.
Merino Beanie Elbe – classic ribbed pattern with double cuff
Elbe combines a classic ribbed pattern with a fixed double cuff. As a result, the beanie offers a comfortable and warm wearing experience.
The balanced fit sits comfortably and maintains its shape without adding unnecessary bulk. Elbe is a versatile merino beanie for everyday wear, the city, and cold winter days.
Merino Beanie Kiel – fine knit with a bit more length
Kiel features a classic fine-knit design and a bit more length at the crown. The beanie sits comfortably close to the head, while the flexible knit structure ensures a secure fit.
This model is suitable for those who prefer a more minimalist, slightly longer silhouette.
Merino Beanie Nebel – compact and minimalist shape

The simple silhouette can be easily combined with various jackets, coats, and winter looks.

From dyeing and spinning to manufacturing, all processing steps take place within a radius of approximately 348 kilometers.
Beanies for women and men
Our merino beanies are designed as unisex models. Their timeless shapes and versatile colors can be styled regardless of gender or personal taste.
When choosing, it is less important whether a beanie is labeled as a women’s or men’s model. More important are:
- desired fit
- beanie height
- knit style
- cuff shape
- preferred color
- desired warmth level
The model descriptions will help you find the right fit.
Sustainable beanies as a Christmas gift
Merino beanies are among the most popular NEUMÜHLE products during the Christmas season. They are practical, durable, and available in various colors.
They make an especially great Christmas gift for people who:
- appreciate high-quality natural materials
- prefer timeless design
- seek fairly and regionally produced products
- spend a lot of time outdoors
- want a useful winter gift
Due to their unisex fit and flexible knit structure, these models also make excellent gifts even if you don't know the exact size of the recipient.
How warm is a merino beanie?
How warm a beanie is depends not only on the material but also on the knit style, thickness, and fit.
A double cuff can provide additional warmth around the forehead and ears. Compact models sit closer to the head, while longer styles can be worn a bit more loosely.
Merino wool supports balanced thermal comfort: it insulates in the cold and can simultaneously absorb moisture without feeling wet to the touch.
How to care for your merino beanie
Merino wool does not need to be washed after every wear. Often, airing out the beanie is sufficient.
Care instructions for merino beanies
- wash only when absolutely necessary
- use gentle hand wash
- use mild wool detergent
- do not rub or wring hard
- dry flat in the open air
- do not tumble dry
- store protected from moths
Gentle care helps to preserve the shape, color, and material properties for a long time.
